What is Neuroscience?

All methods of measuring and imaging the brain’s activity can be categorized as neuroscience. The name is used for a whole group of scientific research focusing on the molecular, cellular, developmental, structural, functional, evolutionary, computing, psychosocial and medical aspects of the nervous system. The knowledge about the brain is constantly developing thanks to the sciences of biology (neurobiology), medicine (neurology), pharmacology, psychology, cognitive science, biomedical engineering and even physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Neuroimaging methods that allow for recording of brain activity and discovering its structures include:

  • Tomography – structural imaging
  • MRI – magnetic resonance imaging
  • fMRI – functional magnetic resonance imaging
  • EEG – electroencephalography
  • NIRS – near-infrared spectroscopy
  • fNIRS – functional near-infrared spectroscopy

Currently, neuroscience is one of the fastest developing scientific fields. The knowledge about the brain is applied in a variety of new areas that are not strictly connected to already mentioned sciences. Those areas of interest include marketing, automation, robotics, ergonomy, studying novice and expert drivers or methods of alternative communication.

Areas of application:

  • Neurobiology
  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology
  • Psychology
  • Cognitive science
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Physiotherapy
  • Rehabilitation
  • Marketing
  • Automatics
  • Robotics
  • Ergonomy
  • Examination of drivers
  • Alternative communication
